Farmings Feats
Ever wondered what farming would be like at some of the World’s highest villages?Agriculture is the mainstay of Spiti’s economy however, it’s limited to only one crop a year due to the difficult climatic conditions the farmers face in this cold desert region. These farmers sweat their hearts out during the short summers as the entire year’s livelihood depends on it. The population being so small, every pair of helping hands is of great value to them!
Working on a farm at over 12000 ft is an altogether different experience and requires higher fitness levels. You need to be physically fit and happy to get your hands dirty!
- Get to know your host family and help out with daily farming and household chores. Exchange stories and cups of tea as you toil together on the land
- Some families run homestays and often find it difficult to manage both their farm as well as the Homestay during the day. Wherever available, you could alternate between farming and manning the homestay
- Gain rich first-hand insights into life and culture as you stay with your host family in the highland villages of Spiti
- Learn and understand the unique agricultural and irrigation practices of the high cold desert Himalayas
- Understand the intricacies of water management and the fragile relationship it shares with the ecology
Experience the farmers’ merriment in toiling with the soil and learn how to turn adversity into assets.

If you feel you are up for living and helping out on a farm for a minimum of 6 days (excluding travel time), we would love to have you over! It would be great if you can come for longer as in our experience, it takes a few days to settle in and acclimatize to the altitude before you can meaningfully begin volunteering.
Accommodation & Meals:Your stay and all meals will be with your host family. You will either get a separate room or will share with other volunteers with a common toilet.
- You are expected to have a good level of commitment while volunteering on the farm.
- Volunteers are treated as family members and not as clients. So if you expect otherwise or have any concerns do let us know beforehand or speak with the Ecosphere management team immediately. If it is within our means we will do our best to address your concern. If the family feels that you do not fit, you will be requested to leave.
- If you’re keen to travel around Spiti, please keep a few extra days before or after your volunteering period.
- Families in Spiti are not well off, hence we expect that you cover your costs for stay and food.
