Spiti Tails: A Visual Dog Census
Building Spiti’s first photographic archive of community dogs to foster better co-existence with humans and wildlife.A journey of lenses and lives to protect the spirit of the valley.
In the high-altitude cold desert of Spiti, every living being—human and animal alike—is part of a delicate ecosystem of survival and care. For centuries, dogs have lived alongside humans as companions and village protectors. As MUSE pioneers community-led models to manage free-ranging dog populations, we need more than just numbers—we need stories, identities, and insights. We are looking for volunteers to help us build a Family Album of Spiti’s village dogs—a first-of-its-kind photo archive that helps us look after their health and the safety of the valley.
Spend a week immersed in the rugged beauty of the Himalayas, moving beyond the tourist trail to document the unique lives of our village dogs. Your lens will help us bridge the gap between ancient traditions and modern conservation, ensuring that the balance between the village and the wild remains healthy.
Create a Digital Archive: Use your camera to take clear ID photos of each dog. This helps us recognize them individually so we can track their medical care and vaccinations.
Observe the Rhythms of Life: Help us note down simple but vital details—is the dog a local regular or a new arrival? Is it a male or a female? Observe and record behavioral traits—distinguishing between socialized village dogs and those showing pack-hunting tendencies. These snapshots help us track the population in real-time.
Map the Bond: Capture how dogs interact with the community. Whether they are resting near a tea shop or acting as protectors of a farmhouse, your photos help us understand how they share resources with the people of Spiti.
Restore the Balance: By documenting individual dogs and their movements, you provide the critical data needed to protect the local livestocks, habitat of the Vulnerable Snow Leopard and the Himalayan Wolf.
Why it matters?
Effective conservation requires moving beyond generic models. To protect the mountains, we need to know its inhabitants individually. Your photos and notes will be the foundation of our dog population management and health strategies, transforming visual snapshots into lasting community impact.
