Program
Day 1Arrive Leh
- Rest and acclimatize to the high altitude of Leh at 3,500 m / 11,500 ft.
- Take it easy to avoid altitude sickness.
Day 2Explore Leh
- Today we will spend the day acclimatising to the altitude and explore Leh its surroundings
- Thiksey Monastery: Visit the “Mini Potala,” a stunning 12-story complex perched on a hill, housing the magnificent 49-foot Maitreya (Future) Buddha statue.
- Shey Palace: Explore the ancient summer capital of Ladakh and marvel at the giant copper-and-gold seated Shakyamuni Buddha.
- Shanti Stupa: End the afternoon at this white-domed stupa for a panoramic view of Leh town and the Indus Valley as the spring sun sets over the peaks.
- Leh Market: Spend your evening wandering through the bustling local market, where you can find everything from traditional stone jewellery to fresh local walnuts and dried apricots.
Day 3Leh - Alchi - Saspol - Aryan Valley
- Alchi Monastery: Explore this 11th-century UNESCO-recognized gem, famous for its Indo-Tibetan murals and intricate wood carvings that have survived for nearly a millennium.
- The Aryan Valley: Enter the villages of Dha and Hanu, home to the Brokpa people. Known for their distinct physical features and elaborate floral headdresses, they are often referred to as the “Last Aryans.”
- Spring Bloom Immersion: Experience the spectacular white and pink apricot blossoms that fill the terraces of these lower-altitude villages, creating a stunning contrast against the rugged river canyons.
- Cultural Stay: Spend the evening in a traditional village stay, learning about the unique customs, language, and the resilient mountain lifestyle of the Brokpa community.
Day 4Aryan Valley - Leh
- The Great Confluence (Sangam): Witness the spectacular meeting of the emerald Indus and the muddy Zanskar rivers. In spring, the contrast between the two rivers is at its most vivid.
- Magnetic Hill: Experience the gravity-defying phenomenon where your vehicle appears to roll uphill on its own against the laws of physics.
- Gurudwara Pathar Sahib: Visit this historic 16th-century site nestled in the mountains, built to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev’s visit to the region and maintained with devotion by the Indian Army.
Day 5Leh - Khardung La - Turtuk
- The High Pass: Reach the summit of Khardung La (17,582 ft) for a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Zanskar and Karakoram mountain ranges.
- Into the Shyok: Follow the turquoise waters of the Shyok River as the valley opens up into vast, dramatic vistas.
- The Village That Changed Nations: Arrive in Turtuk, which was under Pakistani control until 1971. The village retains a distinct Balti culture, language, and architecture found nowhere else in India.
- A Sea of Pink & White: Wander through the stone-walled alleys of the village, completely sheltered by a canopy of blooming apricot trees—the quintessential spring experience in the Himalayas.
Day 6Turtuk - Nubra Valley
- Thang Village Viewpoint: Visit the northernmost point of the Indian border at Thang. From here, you can see the Pakistani army posts and the divided villages across the Line of Control.
- Balti Heritage Walk: Take a final stroll through the upper and lower villages of Turtuk, visiting the Heritage House to see artifacts from the era when the village was part of Pakistan.
- Hunder Sand Dunes: Explore the surreal landscape of Hunder, where the silver sand dunes are set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks and blooming buckthorn bushes.
- Bactrian Camel Safari: Encounter the rare double-humped Bactrian Camels, a living legacy of the ancient Silk Road trade route that once linked this valley to Yarkand and beyond.
- Sunset in the Valley: Enjoy a peaceful evening in the heart of the Nubra Valley, watching the mountains turn golden as the spring sun dips behind the Karakoram range.
Day 7Nubra Valley - Khardung La - Leh
- Diskit Monastery: Before leaving the valley, we visit the historic Diskit Gompa, the oldest and largest in Nubra. Stand beneath the towering 106-foot Maitreya Buddha statue for a final, sweeping view of the Shyok River winding through the valley.
- The Final High: Re-cross Khardung La (17,982 ft). This second crossing is often even more rewarding, offering a final chance to capture photographs of the expansive Himalayan vistas.
- Scenic Descent: Enjoy the winding descent into Leh, passing through North Pullu and watching the city of Leh slowly emerge from the mountain shadows.
- Farewell Evening: Spend your last evening in the Leh market for some last-minute shopping or simply to enjoy a cup of traditional butter tea at a local café.

This was the most rewarding experience of my life. . Spiti Ecosphere gave me an amazing volunteering opportunity that allowed me to help build a greenhouse in a small village in Spiti Valley, a mountain desert where nothing grows. I signed up for Ecosphere’s 2-week voluntourism program that combines volunteer work with the opportunity to explore the beauty of the valley without the negative side effects of commercial tourism. . What Ishita and Ecosphere are doing in Spiti is remarkable. Ecosphere is helping local communities create sustainable means of living through its many projects, volunteerism being just one of them.
