The Kinnaur & Spiti Safari takes you to the stunning valleys of the Sutlej & Sangla in Kinnaur and into the spectacularly graphic Spiti valley. This trip is one of it’s kind with a focus on experiencing Holi – the festival of colours in the picturesque town of Sangla, with Gulal in your hair & aroma of homemade dishes, the exuberance of Holi is hard to miss. Holi in Sangla is a part of the Faguli festival which is a 4 day festival and holi is celebrated on the third day with dry colours.
- Travel into the lush valley of the Satluj river in Kinnaur along the Hindustan-Tibet Highway regarded as one of the most adventurous roads in the Himalayas
- Experience the famous Holi of Sangla

Program
Day 1Chandigarh - Narkanda
- Drive through scenic mountain roads as you leave the plains behind and enter the Himalayan foothills.
- Pass through Shimla and enjoy views of dense pine and deodar forests.
- If time permits, visit Hatu Peak, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges.
- Stroll around Narkanda’s apple orchards and forested trails for a relaxed evening.
- Overnight stay in Narkanda.
Day 2Narkanda - Kalpa
- Drive through the beautiful Sutlej Valley, passing apple orchards, forests, and winding mountain roads.
- Stop at Rampur, once the capital of the former Bushahr kingdom.
- Visit the Padam Palace complex (from outside) en route.
- Continue towards Kalpa with stunning views of the Kinner Kailash range.
- Evening walk through Kalpa village or local orchards.
- Watch a spectacular sunset over the Kinner Kailash peaks, as the mountains glow in golden and crimson hues.
- Overnight stay in Kalpa overlooking snow-capped peaks.
Day 3Kalpa - Chitkul - Sangla
- Drive from Kalpa towards the beautiful Baspa Valley.
- Continue to Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border, known for its wooden houses, scenic river views, and dramatic mountain backdrop.
- Spend time exploring the village, walking to the riverside, and enjoying the crisp mountain air.
- Return towards Sangla, one of the most picturesque valleys of Kinnaur lined with apricot and apple orchards.
- Explore the village or relax by the Baspa River.
- Experience the vibrancy of local festivities and celebrations during Sangla Holi.
- Overnight stay in Sangla.
Day 4Sangla - Holi Celebrations
- Spend the day celebrating Sangla Holi, one of the most vibrant and culturally rich festivals in Kinnaur.
- Experience the unique Kinnauri style of Holi with traditional music, local dances, colourful powders, and warm community gatherings.
- Walk through the village lanes as families come together to celebrate in their own traditional way.
- Enjoy home-cooked local meals, festive treats, and learn about age-old customs that make Holi in the mountains so special.
- Overnight stay in Sangla.
Day 5Kalpa - Nako - Tabo - Kaza
- Transition from lush greens to stark cold desert landscapes along the spectacular Hindustan–Tibet Highway.
- Stop enroute at Khab – the spectacular confluence of the Sutluj and Spiti rivers
- Visit the pristine Nako Lake, a picturesque high-altitude village known for its serene lake and ancient monastery.
- Thrilling drives along roads carved out of rocks – commonly known as one of the World’s Most Dangerous Roads
- Continue to Tabo, home to the 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery, often called the “Ajanta of the Himalayas” for its ancient murals and sculptures.
- Explore the monastery complex and feel the deep spiritual energy of this sacred site.
- Drive onward through rugged Spiti terrain to reach Kaza, the administrative and cultural heart of the valley.
- Arrive in Kaza by evening and rest in a cozy mountain stay.
Day 6Kaza - Komic - Hikkim - Langza - Key - Kibber - Chicham - Kaza
- Begin your day with a drive to Komic, the world’s highest motorable villages, home to the ancient Tangyud Monastery
- Head to Hikkim, where you can send a postcard from the world’s highest post office, a must-do Spiti experience.
- Continue to Langza, famous for its iconic Buddha statue overlooking stunning Himalayan peaks and for spotting marine fossils.
- Drive down to the valley to visit Key Monastery, the biggest and most influential monastery in Spiti, known for its dramatic hillside setting.
- End the day at Chicham Bridge, Asia’s highest suspension bridge, offering breathtaking views of the deep gorge below.
- Return to Kaza by evening for a relaxing night in the mountain air.
Day 7Kaza - Dhankhar - Giu - Sarahan
- Start early from Kaza and travel back in time as you visit Dhankhar, the erstwhile capital of Spiti.
- Visit the ancient Dhankhar Monastery; Fort perched on a cliff.
- Start early from Kaza and drive towards Giu, a remote village near the Indo-Tibetan border.
- From here head to Giu on the Indo-Tibetan border. Visit the Giu Mummy Temple, home to a naturally preserved, 700+ years old mummy of a Buddhist monk — one of Spiti’s most intriguing spiritual sites.
- Continue your journey through changing landscapes as you exit Spiti’s high-altitude desert and re-enter the lush Kinnaur region.
- Reach Sarahan, a charming Himalayan village known for its cedar forests and panoramic mountain views.
- Overnight stay in Sarahan, surrounded by tranquility and crisp mountain air.
Day 8Sarahan - Chandigarh
- Last glimpses of Himachal’s stunning mountains and valleys.
- Return to Chandigarh – marking the end of your Kinnaur & Spiti journey.
- Trip concludes with unforgettable memories of remote valleys, ancient monasteries, and serene Himalayan landscapes.

This was the most rewarding experience of my life. . Spiti Ecosphere gave me an amazing volunteering opportunity that allowed me to help build a greenhouse in a small village in Spiti Valley, a mountain desert where nothing grows. I signed up for Ecosphere’s 2-week voluntourism program that combines volunteer work with the opportunity to explore the beauty of the valley without the negative side effects of commercial tourism. . What Ishita and Ecosphere are doing in Spiti is remarkable. Ecosphere is helping local communities create sustainable means of living through its many projects, volunteerism being just one of them.
