Live & Volunteer at a Nunnery

A rare chance to experience life in a nunnery while you get closely involved in its day-to-day life.

Ever wondered what happens in a Buddhist Nunnery the whole day? Do the nuns sit and meditate the whole day long? What are they like – stoic, serious, other-worldly?

Well you’re definitely in for a surprise!

Living & volunteering in a Nunnery is a very different experience, one that is definitely enlightening and for some, life-changing.

  • Help out with chores, spend time reading, meditate, or just be, all while living amid the surreal mountains and ancient nunneries of Spiti Valley.
  • While you’re here, learn a mantra or two and sit in on the resounding prayer sessions.
  • Gain insight into the lives of the wonderful residents of the nunneries, and perhaps rediscover your own self in the process.

Discover a vibrant, lively community filled with surprises and learn about the nuns’ fascinating stories. This is a unique chance to gain insight into a world that is often shrouded in mystery.

Open your heart and mind to the transformative power of this extraordinary experience and discover the beauty of connection, contemplation, and inner reflection.

Minimum commitment:

If you feel you are up for living and teaching at a nunnery for a minimum of 5 days (excluding travel time), we would love to have you over! It would be great if you can come for longer as in our experience, it takes a few days to settle in and acclimatize to the altitude before you can meaningfully engage at the nunnery.

Accommodation & Meals:

You will be staying within the premises of the Nunnery and all meals will be had with the Nuns. You will get a separate room or a room shared with other volunteers which will have a common toilet.

Please note:

  • This program is only open to women.
  • You are expected to have a good level of commitment while volunteering at the nunnery.
  • Volunteers are treated as part of the nunnery and not as clients. So if you expect otherwise or have any concerns do let us know beforehand or speak with the Ecosphere management team immediately. If it is within our means we will do our best to address your concern.
  • A Nunnery is a place of worship and an institute of learning for nuns who have dedicated their lives to Buddhist studies and are celibate. We expect that you abide by their norms and do not indulge in any intoxicants including smoking and drinking, wear anything revealing or try to develop an intimate relationship with a nun. If the nunnery administration finds your activities/behavior unsuitable you will be requested to leave
  • If you’re keen to travel around Spiti, please keep a few extra days before or after your volunteering period.
  • Nunneries in Spiti do not have a source of income, hence we expect that you cover your costs for stay and food.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Ecosphere
